President Barack Obama announced his goal of distributing $4.35 billion in competitive grants designed to help support innovative educational reform efforts. "This is one of the largest investments in education reform in American history" I believe that since this is a performance-based incentive the states, cities, districts, school and neighborhoods that are economically better off will be the ones who have a better chance of being awarded the grants. The less-fortunate schools and districts are the ones who show more struggle in performing well. These districts have low attendance rates and higher drop-out rates which will make it difficult for them to compete with districts that are performing high already. It seems quite unfair for the less fortunate because even though they really need the grants to help them bring about a better educational system for the children, it will be more challenging for them to prove themselves worthy. President Obama is enforcing different standards to assess students and teachers differently from the NCLB Act is probably the best change that could be made. Teaching to the test, and judging teachers and students by a single test is unfair to both. I believe that we have fallen behind as a country, and that we need to get up to level and higher than that of other nations.
